back with a painting and a subway sketch

OK, it's been a while. Blue Sky has kept me busy, and I've been cooking on some ideas for kids' books, so I haven't posted in forever. Here is a painting (sketch) I did a few years back with Dice when he was living on the west side. It was one of my favorites. The sketch is a subway rider I captured last winter. His puffy coat made him twice as large.

I am getting the itch to get out and paint this year, when it gets a little warmer...
I recently got a small watercolor sketch pad, and I toned the pages with a neutral warm grey. I dusted off my gouache paints, so no more excuses. There will be some color studies coming soon!

  3. Hey Martin, thanks! I'm trying to get back into the habit of doing small paintings, so hopefully this will get me motivated.

Thanks Mike...Coming from you that's high praise.
We'll get the gang out this spring to paint.

  8. thanks Paul! Sorry I haven't written you back. Work has been tough. We are working on a short film with NO time. I'll be in touch soon.

Hey Tony, thanks for the compliment!

Matias, nice of you to say that. I visited Sorolla's studio/museum in Madrid a few years ago, and I remember every painting I saw there. I wish there was more of his works here in the states. Eres de Madrid, si? AMAZING city...

Thanks Gerald! I need to send you my addresses so that we can talk about SKETCHTRAVEL...How is your baby?!

Jeep, I saw the website for the studio! Awesome sketches...You've been busy. Hope the short is coming along well. You going to Comicon this July

  11. Thanks Dustin and Tevik!
Dustin, great blog. Liked the Space Lizard sketch and color.
Tevik, very nice sketches. You have a great sense of character and linework.
I've been bad about posting. The 'day' job has been demanding. We are working on a short at Blue Sky, and we are under the gun to get it done.
Hopefully I'll put up more sketches soon.
